Geisha Happy Dance

I finished one of my geisha’s today!

This is going to be all mine and I already know where I am going to hang her when she’s framed.

Also, here is my first WIP of Spanish Sampler.

Guilt Free January

I am trying to maximize the rest of the time that I have this month to indulge in Guilt Free January!!! So, instead of finishing my geisha, I instead started two new projects in the past few days. :) Both of them are from The World of Cross Stitching magazine and both designed by Sue Page (who coincidentally is the same designer as the geisha I am about done with).

I started Queen of Egypt as well as her Tudor Lady.

Also by the end of the month I’ll have started another birth announcement design. My coworker is expecting a grandson so I am stitching a small Classic Pooh design for her daughter-in-law. A couple of nights ago I put together a webpage for them so that they can have somewhere to put pictures. Tomorrow night is the baby shower, so no stitching for me. Plus, I have to come home after the shower and do schoolwork.

This weekend I plan to finish the geisha, start the birth announcement and then who knows what else. That’s the joy of having almost 30 WIPS! :)

We now return to stitching

Thanks to those who commented on my librarian rant below. :) Glad to have inspired and see others that enjoy their careers as well. But, I finally have a stitching update!

Last weekend when Isis was in the hospital, I started Innocent Guardian. Here is my first progress picture. Honestly though, I’m ambivalent about it and don’t be surprised if I restart it. I am doing it on 22ct natural linen and the coverage is not as concentrated as I prefer. I started off using the kit thread, then I started to convert to DMC and the DMC does cover better. I may give it another round of stitching time and see what I think.

I worked on TW’s Camelot Sampler. I don’t have a new pic of it as it is way too big for my scanner, but I’ll try to get a pic soon. I mostly worked more on the border.

Last night, I worked a few hours on Yew Tree Cottage. It is coming along nicely. Definitely a nice small project that I should be able to count as a happy dance this year.

And, speaking of happy dances — I expect to have one soon. I got in the last bit of kreinik that i needed to finish the geisha design I am doing from World of Cross Stitching. I guesstimate I could finish her tonite if I started stitching on her now. However, methinks I want to stitch on something else, so we’ll see. Stay tuned…

Oh, and I also started a crochet afghan for Kalonji. I worked on it for three hours and have approximately 20% completed.

Why You Should Fall To Your Knees and Worship A Librarian

Posted by taneya on January 22, 2004 under Uncategorized | 4 Comments to Read

the following is from http://www.librarianavengers.org/worship.html
“Ok, sure. We’ve all got our little preconceived notions about what librarians are and what they do. Many people think of them as diminutive civil servants, scuttling about “Sssh-ing” people and stamping things. Well, think again buster.

Librarians have degrees. They go to graduate school for Information Science and become masters of data systems and human/computer interaction. Librarians can catalog anything from an onion to a dog’s ear. They could catalog you. Librarians wield unfathomable power. With a flip of the wrist they can hide your dissertation behind piles of old Field and Stream magazines. They can find data for your term paper that you never knew existed. They may even point you toward new and appropriate subject headings.

People become librarians because they know too much. Their knowledge extends beyond mere categories. They cannot be confined to disciplines. Librarians are all-knowing and all-seeing. They bring order to chaos. They bring wisdom and culture to the masses. They preserve every aspect of human knowledge. Librarians rule. And they will kick the crap out of anyone who says otherwise.”

okay, it’s me talking now
In all seriousness, for the past few days I have been reflecting on my experiences as a medical librarian and on how much i LOVE my job! I’m always told how rare that is, and I truly can’t imagine living any other way. I love providing information. I love organizing information. My job is very dynamic and I have the opportunity to get involved in so many different aspects of information provision.

I help build digital libraries so people can quickly go to resources of interest. I help train medical students on how to critically evaluate and critique the medical literature. I help write research grants and publications to share with our profession the innovative programs and projects we do in our library. We build tools that enable knowledge reuse throughout the medical center. Learning is never done and continuing education about resources is an ongoing process. Our library is an internationally known and well-respected institution for training clinical medical librarians (we have a team of librarians that round with health care teams in the medical center). I have the opportunity to audit courses in the medical center, school of public health, nursing. I participate in our library’s annual budget preparation process and present to medical center administration aspects of our services. I have great cowokers, and of course, I have a great boss!!!!!

I could go on forever, but I think you get the idea. My days are almost never dull. I am definitely not your stereotypical librarian. :) For some reason, I just felt the need to tell the world how much I love my career. Thanks for bearing with me and no – I haven’t stitched a bit in three days!

Isis is home!

Yeah! I brought Isis home tonite. She is definitely back to her former self. :) I have some antibiotics to give to her and next week I have to take her back to the vet to get her staples removed, but I’m so incredibly happy to have her back. It was weird not having my little girl here.

As for stitching – I did some over the weekend. I worked on Camelot Sampler and I started a new project. The project I started is a Dimensions Gold kit that my coworker bought me for my birthday this summer called Innocent Guardian. I’ll provide a scan later.

Isis is sick

Posted by taneya on January 16, 2004 under Uncategorized | 6 Comments to Read

Our cat is sick. :( Due to symptoms of vomiting and lethargy emerging last night, I took her to the emergency pet clinic. Based on physical exam and history (plus me telling them that I cross-stitch and crochet and that she occasionally gets into the thread and yarn) they diagnosed her as having some of that yarn in her intestines. She was also very dehydrated. X-rays supported the diagnosis and she had surgery to remove the thread this morning. As of now, she is recuperating, but the vet says she is not out of the woods yet. She had some thread looped around her tongue and had quite a bit in her intestines.

I feel very bad about this entire situation and wish I did a better job of keeping my thread and yarn away from her. Please keep her in your thoughts and I’ll update once I know more. It is likely she will stay hospitalized through the weekend.

Updated 1/17 – I was able to go by and visit her last night. She was doped up on pain meds and just looked so delicate laying in her cage. They were able to remove all of the thread and they even gave it to me. By looking at it, I could see that she had gotten into the threads I have been using for the stitching I’ve been doing the past week on my geisha as part of it was the metallic blue I’m using for the water. I called this morning and she is doing better. She is more alert they said and not nearly as depressed. She seems to be keeping water down, so they will probably try and give her food tomorrow. More as I find out…

Update 1/18 – I visited her last night and she was doing better. The staff told me she was getting more alert every hour and was even moving around some. When I saw her, she was laying down, but was responsive – she even purred when I started petting her. :) Hopefully I’ll get to bring her home tomorrow, so I’m excited and hopeful about that. Thanks for the well wishes everyone. :)

Princess of Japan

I am going to hurt Kalonji! He is out to sea right now, but apparently before he left, he ordered this Princess of Japan Barbie for me. :) She is so gorgeous. She will fit along just beautifully with my geishas that I’ve stitched. Oh, and last month he bought me a geisha calendar.

Great weekend

I have had a very productive weekend. I finished the sampler for my boss on Saturday and will give it to her tomorrow morning.

I also made two more scarves and started another one last night. I have just finished working out, so as soon as I freshen up, I’ll probably get back to this one. I don’t think I have enough yarn so I’ll just do as much as I can tonite and pick up some more yarn tomorrow.

I also spent a majority of today and last night stitching on one of my geisha girls. This will definitely be my next finish. I am almost done with the stitching. I have three leaves at the bottom to finish that I couldn’t because I don’t have the DMC color, then the lake to stitch with kreinik braid #4. After that, only backstitching is left. I think I sense an upcoming HD this weekend?? :) You can see my progress on the geisha [link removed 1/31/04]

I also bought the coolest gadget yesterday, an FM Wireless Transmitter. It allows me to broadcast sound from my computer through my stereo system. I spent several hours yesterday listening to my music files and internet radio this way. It’s great b/c my stereo sound is FAR better than this computer sound. The transmitter can also be used in a car – to transmit sound from any portable audio device through your car radio. It’s very cool.

I also bought Season 4 of Sex and the City, so I have watched it all this weekend. I think I’ll be picking up Season 5 in a couple of weeks. Later on tonite I’ll watch the newest episode of this last season. Yesterday I also saw LOTR for the second time on the IMAX screen here. That is such a great movie!

And, since I started the South Beach Diet two months ago, i have now lost approx 20lbs! Keep your fingers crossed for me as I go for my next 20lb loss by the end of March.

I’ve got a crochet bug

Posted by taneya on January 9, 2004 under Uncategorized | 2 Comments to Read

I can’t remember if I posted this, but last month, I had an urge to crochet again after some friends were crocheting at my LNS. So, I get all excited about it and proceed to go home and start a scarf. I have done some crocheting before but I always have difficulty starting, so my scarf edges were very uneven. Uneven edges is a consistent problem of mine, so out of frustration, I put it down.

Well, last night, I decided I wanted to try again. So, my friend sat down with me and started a scarf for me, and also showed me how to start and and I learned what I was doing incorrectly. I was so thrilled! So, I went home and this time success – I crocheted 2 scarves last night!

They went fairly fast – the first one took about 2.5 hours. It is stitched using three skeins at once on a size Q hook – 11 half-double crochet’s across each row.

The second one only took about an hour and a half! This one is also on a Q hook, and is 10 half-double crochet’s across the row. Both scarves are around 60 inches long.

I am so thrilled at myself! However, I really have a strong urge to do an afghan. But, I need to make sure I can start with confidence, so I’ll probably practice some over the weekend.

Tonite – I HAVE to do the drawn thread on my sampler! My framer measured it last night and is getting all the materials ready so I can take it to her tomorrow for framing.

My hubby loves me!

This is what happens when you leave your husband at home and armed with a credit card :)

Kalonji sent me these roses today and they are gorgeous! He’s always sending me flowers – aren’t I the luckiest? And, it was “just because” – no special reason. I love him!

Sttiching wise, i’ve had a change in plans. I’ve decided to wait until the weekend to do the drawn thread on the sampler as I have a myriad of other things to do this week. With Kalonji leaving on Thursday, we have several things to take care of. But, last night I did stitch on one of my geisha girls for a couple of hours. Then, I got restless and didn’t want to stitch, so I looked over the syllabus for a class i’m taking long-distance to start off my new degree program. I can already see the upcoming decline in stitching time…
