  At 20 years old joined Company G 2nd Regiment of NC States Troops - mustered on April 11, 1862 - appointed colonel on April 17, 1863 - later enlisted in Company J 27th Regiment - transferred back to Company G 2nd Regiment November 5, 1863, captured at Mechanicsville, VA May 30 1864 and confined at Point Lookout, Maryland - Released from there June 30, 1865.
