  Notes	Think that Richard is Spratt's father. In 1870, Spratt is enumerated next door to Richard. Sprat is listed as White, as is all the kids. Sprat's wife Martha is enumerated as Black. Checked the slave census records for 1860 and Richard McBride owned about 12 slaves. In 1860, Spratt would have been about 40 years old, his wife Martha would have been about 30. The kids who would have been alive in 1860 are Eliza, Henderson, Lency & William and they would have been about 8, 6, 4 and 2 respectively. Guess what? Of the 12 slaves Richard owned the ages of 5 of them match very well to Spratt's family and the ages they would have been in 1860. The only one that does not match is Martha and I wonder if he was not the kids' mom b/c they are all enumerated as white in 1870, including Andrew, which would indicate that if they were black, they were light-skinned. She is enumerated as Black. So, Martha excluded, Richard owned in 1860: - a male slave that was 38 years old (close to the age Spratt would have been) - a female slave that was 8 years old (this is the exact age that Eliza would have been) - a male slave that was 6 years old (exact age that Henderson would have been) - a female slave that was 4 years old (exact age that Lency would have been) - a male slave that was 2 (exact age that William would have been) In 1850, Spratt would have been about 30 in 1850. Richard owned 12 slaves back then too, and the males were ages 23 and 20 and two young one year old boys. So, it's harder to know from this year if Spratt was one of them.
