Obituary: Benjamin Granade Koonce Jr.

Dr. Benjamin Granade Koonce, 87, died Sunday, September 20 at Mayview Convalescent Center in Raleigh. Dr. Koonce was the son of Mary Wingfield McMullan Koonce and Benjamin G. Koonce, Sr. of Hertford. He is survived by his sister, Mary Wood Koonce Wallace of Belhaven; two nieces, Frances Dabney Rice of Hartville, OH and Mary McMullan Alexander of Huntersville. Dr. Koonce served three years in the U. S. Army during World War II. Upon receiving his masterís degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, he accepted a teaching position at Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana, after which he attended Princeton University in New Jersey where he received his Ph.D. He taught at North Carolina State University for 32 years as a professor in the field of English. He retired from teaching in 1984. Ben lived in his home on Dover Road in Raleigh for 39 years surrounded by the flowers and plants which he enjoyed tending and observing daily. In 2007 he moved to Magnolia Glen retirement home until recently entering Mayview. Dr. Koonce's interest and research in genealogy left a rich heritage for his family. He had a deep and abiding love for Ireland and often traveled there to visit his adopted family Richard and Maire MacCarthy and their children Shane, Myles, Aileen and Niall. His regard for his family and his beloved friends was shown in the love he expressed for them. He is remembered fondly by his good friend and attorney-in-fact, Lawrence R. Mattox of Raleigh. Funeral arrangements were made by the Cremation Society of the Carolinas. Interment will held 2:00 p.m. Sunday, September 27th in Cedar Wood Cemetery in Hertford, where there will be a graveside gathering of family and friends.
