September 14, 1906

Tampa, Fla. – Sept. 11 — Information from Cuba Monday says that Alfredo LABORDE and a hundred men deserted to the insurgents; that Pino GUERRA, leader of the insurgents, sent LABORDE back to the authorities, saying he did not want such men, but adding that he was grateful for the men and munitions that came with the leader.

LABORDE was charged recently with murder and was placed in jail near Havana.  He offered the government that if he should be paroled he would organize a hundred men and fight for the governement, agreeing to return for trial after the conclusion of his utilities.  His offer was accepted with the result that he deserted with his command to the rebel leader.

LABORDE was prominent as a filibuster for Cuba previous to the Spanish-American war.

Website Reconfiguration

Taneya Koonce | June 19, 2011 | COMMENTS:No Comments »

The Hillsborough County site has been undergoing some reconfiguration these past couple of days. In order to keep the process of adding additional content more streamlined, I had to make some changes.  Unfortunately, this does mean that you may encounter broken links.

But, don’t despair! Everything that was here before is still here, though it may be moved.  The best place to start if you land on a broken page is our Records page; use that list to browse material.   The RSS feed URL is also changing to push only those posts that I wish to indicate as “Annoucements.”  This will help reduce the clutter in your RSS feed reader.

I’ve also added a link (in the sidebar) to my Twitter profile just in case you would like to stay connected. Take a look around and enjoy!

He was assigned to the 101st Airborne.  His training commenced at Ft. Benning, GA for jump training.  Then he was sent to Ft. Bragg, NC.

On January 3, 1945, he sent the following letter home.

He was sent by ship to North Africa for staging for D-Day Invasion.  The 101st moved to Bastone, France.  His unit was surrounded by Germans.  The winter weather was bad and the planes in England couldn’t get off the ground to help them.  When the weather broke the planes started shooting the German tanks that surrounded them.  General Patton started fighting the Germans back.  They were rescued and sent for final staging for the D-Day invasion.  They boarded planes to be dropped behind German lines for the D-Day invasion.  The planes were flying in formation when Murray’s plane was hit before he or anyone could jump.  There were no survivors.

Murray B. Roberts’ name is on the WWII wall in Tallahasse, FL.
