As the dazzling reflection of the snow-covered earth grew dim by the sinking of the winters sun behind the Western hills at eventide on Wednesday, a large number of our people gathered within the M.E. Church to witness the marriage of Miss Addie May Latham, one of Plymouths’s most accomplished daughters, to Mr. P.W. Brinkley, one of our most popular young businessmen.

At the appointed hour the strains of the wedding march drifted out from the organ under the artistic touch of Mrs. G.W. Harney, and the bride entered the right aisle leaning on the arm of Mr. Clarence Latham, while the groom entered the left aisle accompanied by Mr. W.N. Cooper; they were preceded to the altar by the ushers, Mess. E.D. Carstarphen and R.P. Walker, who took positions on either side, while Rev. T.M. Plyler read the ceremony which made them man and wife.

The Beacon joins the many friends of this popular couple in extending best wishes and happy congratulations.

Roanoke Beacon – 20 Jun 1899

On Friday evening shortly after six o’clock, Mr. James COLLINS and Miss Hattie WILLIAMS of Roper, drove into our town and stopped at the residence of Mr. S.W. BEASLEY, announcing as they entered that they were going to be married.  A messenger soon returned with the license and Justice J.P. HILLIARD, and the ceremony was hurriedly performed making them man and wife.  

The bride is the youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. H.J. WILLIAMS, of Roper, and one of the acknowledged belles of Washington county.  The groom is one of the most popular of Washington county boys, and holds a responsbile position with the Roper Lumber Co., at Belhaven, to which place they returned on Saturday to make their future home.  

The Beacon extends happy congratulations and best wishes for future happiness.  While they were “married in haste,” may they never repent, even at leisure.

Not directly related to Plymouth or Washington County, NC, but Edgecombe County was close enough! I located this marriage notice published in the New York Times on 24 Nov 1888. Roanoke Beacon – 12 Aug 1898

Married.  On Wednesday afternoon, Aug. 3rd at 2 o’clock, at the home of the bride’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Blount, near Roper, Mr. William Archibald, of Yeatesville, and Miss Laura Blount, Rev. E.P. Green, of Plymouth, officiating.  The attendants were, Miss Ella Blount, with Mr. Warren Godard, and Miss Bertha Archibald, with Mr. W.A. Blount.

Immediately after the ceremony the bridal party took the train for the home of the groom, near Yeatesville, where a reception was held at night and the happy couple received the congratulations of their many friends.  The Beacon extends its best wishes to this popular young couple.

Cupid’s Capers – The M.E. Church at Roper was the scene of a pretty marriage last night at 8 o’clock, the contracting parties being Mr. W.B. Jones, a popular salesman of that town, and Miss Florida Spruill, one of Washington county’s most lovable young ladies.  The attendants were: Miss Alice Cahoon with Mr. Johnnie Hassell,  Miss Bessie Brown with Mr. Clem Chesson; Maid of Honor, Miss Eloise Johnston; Best Man, Mr. Jas. Spruill.  The wedding march was played by Mrs. J.T. Lewis.

After the ceremony the bridal party, with a few invited friends,  repaired to the home of the bride’s parents, where a reception was held until 11 o’clock.  Our best wishes are extended to the happy couple.

Grace Episcopal Church was the scene to two pretty marriages on Wednesday morning, April 27th. The church was beautifully decorated, and above the chappel was suspended a large bell of evergreens and native flowers, under which the young people took the sacred vows.

The first marriage of Mr. Chas. L. Morton and Miss Myrtle Bennett at 7 o’clock, and the latter was Mr. R.A. Williford and Miss Clara Jackson, at 7:40. The flower gilrs were Misses Carrie Alexander and Jamie Bryan, and the ushers were Mess. W.N. Cooper and P.W. Brinkley.

Miss Bennett entered from the rear door, leaning on the arm of Mr. L.P. Hornthal; Mr. Morton entered from the vestry room accompanied by Mr. Herman Hornthal. Miss Jackson entered from the rear door, attended by her Maid of Honor, Miss Mattie Williford, and Mr. Williford entered from the vestry room attended by his best man, Capt. Bullock.

Immediately after the ceremony Mr. and Mrs. Morton took the N & S Steamer for a trip North, while Mr. and Mrs. Williford boarded the south bound train for a visit to the groom’s parents in Nashville.

The Beacon extends happy congratulations to these young people.

Married.

At the home of Mr. A.N. Waters of Jefferson street, Wednesday evening at 8 o’clock, Mr. Richard T. Venters to Miss Connie Waters.

This marriage was a most quiet one, only a few intimate friends of the contracting parties being present. The ceremony which made them man and wife was performed by the Rev. G.L. Finch, of the Baptist Church, in a most solemn manner.

The bride is an accomplished young woman, loved by all for her noble, christian spirit. The groom has few equals as a man, and during his stay of a few years among our people, he has won an enviable reputation.

To these popular young people we extend best wishes, hoping that life holds many blessings in store for them.

The M.E. Church at Roper, with its decorations of evergreens and flowers was the scene of a pretty marriage on Wednesday evening last, the contracting parties being Mr. J.T. LEWIS and Miss Lelia SAVAGE.

At the appointed hour the bridal party entered the church in the following order: The groom, escorted by his best man, Mr. E. CHRISTIAN, entered the left aisle, being preceded by usher Mr. W. N. COOPER, of Plymouth, the bride, with the Maid of Honor, her sister, Miss Anna SAVAGE, entered the right aisle, preceded by usher — LEWIS. At the alter they were met by Rev. E. H. DAVIS, who performed the ceremony which made them man and wife.

After the ceremony the bridal party repaired to the residence of the bride’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.L. SAVAGE, where a magnificent reception was held. The bridal presents were numerous and costly. We join the many friends in extending congratulations.

Dear Sir – Christmas has gone for the year 1889. We had a fine time and the time passed quietly.

• The wedding spoken of in my last letter came off on the 17, of December at the residence of the bride’s father, Mr. Geo. Bowen, the contracting parties were Mr. Goodman Tetterton and Miss Lena Bowen, Rev. N. H. Harrison officiating. The happy couple are now living at this place. We wish them a long and happy life.
• Mr. Edgar R. Allen is quite ill with typhoid fever.
• Mrs. A. R. Allen has been quite ill with heart disease but is improving very rapidly.
• Little Elise Bateman has been very ill but is now improving. We wish her a speedy recovery. I will close with best wishes for the editor.
