At her house in this town on Wednesday night at 12 o’clock, after a long and painful illness. Mrs. E. R. Latham, wife of our worthy mayor, Capt. E. R. Latham.

The deceased was almost 38 years of age, a devoted christian and member of Grace Episcopal Church, a loving wife and kind mother. She leaves a husband and two children to mourn their loss.

The funeral services will take place at Grace church this morning at 11 o’clock. Our heartfelt sympathies go out to the bereaved relatives and friends.

Research Note: Capt. E. R. Latham is Edgar R. Latham. His wife referred to here is Lina Inez Latham. According to the book, Washington County North Carolina Cemeteries 1769-1997: Volume 1-Plymouth Township, she was born April 1, 1819 and her death date as confirmed on the headstone is October 23, 1889. In the 1880 census, the family is enumerated as family #112 in district 138, Plymouth. They have three children – Clarence in 9, Aileen (sp?) is 4, and Walter is 3. Edgar’s occupation is Steamboat CaptIn a quick search, I located a family bible record that indicates Edward married again shortly after Lena’s death, and I also found a trees in Ancestry. However, the two have different variations on the name of his second wife. That information has Edgar’s paternal line going all the way back to the 1700′s, Plymouth, Mass. Wow.
